Why in the US is washed in the laundry, but not at home

In Hollywood films you can often see laundries, which are constantly used by the population: here they wash, meet, simply communicate. Why Americans do not use washing machines at home?

In the US, washed in public laundries: reasons

I must immediately say that in America there are houses with washing machines, more often it refers to the countryside. Here people wash their own clothes. Just the distance to the towns in which the laundry is located, quite significant. It would be illogical to go to the laundry by car, wasting your time and money refilling the car.

Another thing is megacities, where in the houses most often there are no washing machines. The few exceptions are "Laundry rooms", located in residential complexes. This is a special room where there are several washing machines.

Non-washing machines work here, as in every laundry: you have to pay for the laundry. The only difference is that "Laundry rooms" are located in the same house with the tenants.

Why Americans wash in the laundry:

  1. The car occupy a certain space, in America, as a rule, a small room is allocated for them. Americans do not install them in the bathroom or in the kitchen. That is, so living space is lost, and in America it is quite expensive. Therefore, the room is most often used as a pantry.
  2. Most apartments in US cities are rented. Landlord is trying to avoid problems. Washing machines often fail, and repairs are quite expensive. At the same time there is a threat of flooding of neighbors. The court may claim significant damages to the injured party.
  3. Many consider that it is more expedient to use laundry. You can load 2-3 washing machines at the same time and wash them much faster than at home.
  4. America is a country where people migrate all the time. When getting a better job, people just move to another place. Because it makes no sense to buy a washing machine. A default refrigerator and stove are available in any accommodation.

How much does this service cost Americans?

All laundries have scoreboards showing the process in progress. They display the current value. All cars can only accept coins of 25 cents.

The number of coins is thrown and the required mode is selected. As a rule, the cost of one wash is 1.5-2.5 $. Approximate cycle 1 hour.

In any laundry is a coin changer. Many laundries also have automatic dispensers that sell for the same 25 cents.
