How often do I need to change the thermal grease in a laptop

Sometimes you will notice that some of the laptop keyboard has become hotter than others. Or, in general, the following unpleasant situation arose: you are creating an important document for work, and suddenly your computer shuts down without warning.

This is not a global problem and you should not immediately contact a service center (or even a store for a new device). This article will explain in detail why this happens and, most importantly, how to avoid such cases.

The situations described above can be saved by an elementary replacement of thermal paste on the processor. To do this you will need to unscrew the top cover of the laptop with a screwdriver.

Thermal grease itself is a substance that provides thermal conductivity. An alternative to it can be a thermal pad, but it is used only when there is too much space between the contacting parts.

Most often, still need pasta. It always contains a metal crumb in order to ensure electrical conductivity. Therefore, you should not put it on the electronic component is too thick - the processor can be burned. In addition, during application it is necessary to act very carefully and make sure that the thermal grease does not get into the surrounding parts, otherwise there is a risk of a short circuit when the computer is turned on.

Reference! If you constantly put the laptop on the bed or pillows, then it will overheat faster. And this means that it will be necessary to change the paste several times more often, since it will quickly become obsolete.

In fact, despite all these moments, the replacement of the heat-conducting paste is not so difficult - it will take you no more than 15 minutes.

For comfortable work, it is generally recommended to arrange cleaning a home laptop at least once a year (sometimes it is even recommended every six months).

Office equipment can be cleaned every three to four years.

In order not to bring the situation to the states described at the beginning of the article, you can periodically view information about the device. For example, through the program AIDA64. After you download it, install it and launch it, we find information about the temperature of the processor. If it is above 75-80 degrees, then replacement is required immediately.

Reference! There are cases when thermal grease is initially defective and does not cope with its purpose.

So, how to do all this? We offer a detailed algorithm of actions:

  1. We remove the battery.
  2. Using a screwdriver (usually a cross), remove the back cover of the laptop.
  3. Dry wipe the accumulated dust and a cotton swab soaked in alcohol, carefully remove the old dried thermal paste.
  4. We extrude from the syringe a little new paste on the center of the processor. Usually you do not need to smear it, but you can do it with a plastic card.
  5. Install back the cooling radiator.
  6. Screw the lid back on.

Important! When installing the radiator, make sure that the applied paste is not smeared around. If this happens, then you need to remove it again and wipe everything gently.

If you follow these simple rules, overheating and failure of the laptop can be avoided.
