Who came up with folding chairs for the audience

We have long been accustomed to comfortable folding seats in theaters and cinema. You can find ordinary wooden chairs only in a provincial cinema with Soviet repair. I wonder how a person came up with such a simple and convenient solution?

By whom and when were the folding chairs invented?

The first reclining chairs appeared in the 19th century in Boston. Aaron Allen received a patent for his invention on December 5, 1854, and the novelty quickly took root in the United States, and then around the world.

What were the first folding seats

Initially, the theater chair was an ordinary wooden chair, the seat of which was fixed using an axis. The owners of theaters appreciated the advantages of the innovation: the distance between the rows was reduced, and much more people could fit in the hall. Viewers find it easier to get to their place, especially the ladies in evening toilets with fluffy skirts.

What modern folding chairs look like

After 150 years, seat designs have become much more convenient and comfortable. You have to spend at least two hours in the hall, so manufacturers offer the most common option - a soft seat with a filler, lined with a dense fabric, often made of fireproof material.

The back of the chair has a curved shape, repeating the bends of the spine, and while watching the back practically does not get tired. Typically, such chairs recline not only the seat, but also the armrests. Special cup holders are provided for drinks.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW! In some cinemas, the seat base is a hollow tube of large diameter. If during the session you drop your phone or wallet, first of all look there - the lost thing may be inside this pipe.

Owners of VIP-halls rely on the maximum comfort of the visitor. Armchairs can be either single or twin. Often they are provided with a folding table for food. There are constructions with automatic control - the viewer can fully adjust the seat.

REFERENCE. Why does the seat recline when you get up? Thanks to the counterweight - a metal plate that is mounted on the edge of the seat. There are also mechanical folding chairs, which are manually brought to the desired position, and spring mechanisms - they practically do not make noise and are best suited for movie theaters.

Chairs in the theater halls do not include cup holders and tables. They differ primarily in their refined design, corresponding to the classic interior in theaters and philharmonic societies. Typically, chairs are covered with velvet fabric, decorated with carvings or embossed patterns. Manufacturers produce both individual chairs and sectional rows, most often without fastening to the floor.

REFERENCE: theater furniture has special acoustic properties, can absorb or reflect sound depending on the material and model. Manufacturers can provide customers with acoustic test results to find the best fit.
