Do-it-yourself coffee table restoration

Interior items have their own service life. In this article we will talk about a coffee table. Over time, it becomes covered with chips, varnish cracks and stains. It would seem that the interior detail requires decommissioning, but we will not make hasty decisions and will certainly save the table. That is, we will restore the coffee table. Under the restoration should be understood the process of returning to old spoiled things their attractive and aesthetic appearance.

Do-it-yourself coffee table restoration

This is a simple process. It does not require special skills and artistic imagination. And the work itself is very short in time, only the drying stages take time, but about everything in order.

Choosing materials and tools

To update the product we need to prepare:

  • primer;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brushes;
  • furniture wax;
  • sandpaper.

Update process

It includes several stages:

  • analysis on the constituent elements;
  • cleaning (removal of the old coating);
  • restoration and surface preparation;
  • painting;
  • fastening.

A certain difficulty in the restoration is that the item must be completely processed: countertop, base, legs. Assembled to carry out all the necessary procedures in a quality manner, it is not possible, therefore, we disassemble our table.

In order to clean the table details from traces of varnish or the previous decor, we take sandpaper (coated in coarse coarse crumbs) and thoroughly remove everything to the “wood”.

IMPORTANT. Bprotect eyes and respiratory tract from contact with cleaning elements.

We cover the cleaned surfaces with a soil mixture. Rubbing it thoroughly. At the painting stage, we can add some decoration elements, such as applying patterns with a thin brush to the surface painted with acrylic paint. But here you need to have a sense of proportion, say, if our table was previously a uniform color with signs of minimalism, then painting it “under the Khokhloma” would not be a restoration in the classical sense of the word, but rather decoupage or decorating, which was not our plan.

IMPORTANT. This process will take most of the time, because it will take several layers to cover the disassembled parts, and everyone should dry thoroughly enough, and outdoors, since acrylic paint fumes are harmful to health.

REMEMBER. After the paint layer dries, we process it with sandpaper coated in small crumbs, after which our paint will not leave smudges or stains.

Sometimes, as an option for coloring, use Marilov water composition. It is also applied in several layers, achieving the desired depth of tone.

After our table is restored, we will now consolidate the work done. Take the wax and melt it in a water bath. When it cools down a little with a wide brush, apply it to the surface and to all other components. Further, after drying, gently, but carefully rub it with a soft cloth. We repeat the procedure until our coffee table becomes perfectly smooth.

Then re-distribute the varnish. At this final point, it is worth paying attention to the choice of varnish. If we set a goal of bright saturated shine, then we choose one of the varieties of glossy varnish. If we need to get a calm effect, then we opt for velvet and matte varnishes. Fortunately, the choice of varnish coatings is great.

Well, our old coffee table has been completely restored. It is very nice when things returned the perfect look, and they managed to restore it on their own.
