Every motorist has to deal with the problem of storing a removable set of wheels, depending on a particular season. The shape and size of tires require a convenient place, even for temporary location. The purchase of a special rack will entail unforeseen expenses, and considerable. But the manufacture of shelves for wheels with their own hands will solve this problem without resorting to big waste.

What you can make a wheel storage rack

The raw materials from which the shelves are made must be strong and withstand the weight of the tires along with the disks. By the type of materials used, there are racks:

  • metal;
  • wooden;
  • combined.

After putting things in order in the garage, you can find unclaimed bars of wood or long-abandoned metal profiles that are used in the manufacture of shelves. In the absence of such, it is necessary to select and purchase the desired material.

ATTENTION! Tires with disks are heavy, so the selected material must have a strength sufficient to locate the maximum amount of rubber on the shelf.

Before making any, even a very simple design, a sketch is performed. The design of the rack is carried out for the vertical storage of tires without disks. The drawing includes the dimensions of the product, as well as the distance between the individual elements of the frame. It takes into account the radius of the wheels that will be stored - this affects the size of the cross beams connecting the uprights. The sketch reflects the number and length of the longitudinal rails, depending on the number of proposed products that will be stored on the shelf.

REFERENCE! The standard executive dimensions are considered to be a height of 2 m and a width of 1.5 m. But if the conditions of the room or the requirements of the user do not allow to comply with these values, then this is not a violation of the design, but only individual features.

When designing a temporary arrangement of tires horizontally, the sketch provides for such a width that allows the rubber to stably lie on the surface. This storage method is used for tires with disks. The height between the shelves is made greater than the width of the wheels that will be stacked on it, while the number of stacked products is recommended no more than two. The dimensions of the structure should be larger than the parameters of rubber and allow free use of the internal space for storage of tires.

Metal rack for vertical storage of wheels

Reliability and durability of metal structures is higher than wooden. The use of metal and its profiles will make it possible to make a practical rack for tires.

What materials will be needed

Before starting work, the following materials are prepared:

  1. corner size 35-50 mm;
  2. profile pipe of rectangular cross section, for example, 40x15 mm or the like;
  3. to ensure rigidity, additional struts from the profile strip, with a width of 35-50 mm, are used.

In the absence of a welding machine, fixing bolts with nuts and washers are required. The threads must withstand the load, so it is recommended to use the size of the M8 connections.

ATTENTION! For ease of connection, a rectangular pipe is selected so that one side matches the size of the corner.

Harvest the necessary tools

To assemble the required design you will need:

  • grinder with cutting discs;
  • screwdriver;
  • measuring and marking tool;
  • welding machine with electrodes;
  • drill;
  • hammer and locksmith set.

Preparation of the components of the rack

Before proceeding with the assembly, the material is cut into blanks, which will be used in the manufacture of the rack. Depending on the required dimensions of the product indicated in the drawing, the corners and rectangular pipes are cut into segments used as racks, longitudinal rails and stiffeners. For ease of installation, the blanks are laid out, depending on the difference in size.

DIY rack assembly

After preparing the material, proceed to assembly of the structure.

  • First, mark the joints of the parts and weld the side posts. Vertical supports are made from a corner, and the cross-beams are made from a rectangular profile pipe. If the shelves are suspended, then the racks will be in the form of a trapezoid, and for a conventional floor rack, they look like a ladder with a small number of steps.
  • At the projected height, longitudinal rails are welded first to one rack and then to another. The material of the shared supports must be strong, so they use a corner.

IMPORTANT! Tires will rest on the longitudinal rail. To avoid deformation of the rubber, it is recommended to turn the corner so that the wheels touch the flat surface of the profile. Or use a round profile for longitudinal supports.

  • The presence of a large length or height can violate the stiffness of the product under load. To prevent this, the design is reinforced with diagonal or transverse stripes that will not interfere with the placement of tires.
  • With the floor arrangement of the finished structure, metal "nickels" are welded under the support posts. Such supporting planes will not allow the rack to sink when fully loaded with wheels. Wall mounting will require mounting on hooks or using brackets with dowels.

Before installing the product in the desired place, the metal surface is primed several times, and then coated with paint.

Wheel storage rack

Tires that do not separate from discs can be stored horizontally. The manufacture of shelves for such placement is characterized by the possibility of using sheet material as raw materials and a smaller height, which is especially important in a limited space.

The sequence of work is similar to the assembly of the rack. The difference is that the longitudinal rails are replaced with sheet material, and the height between the shelves corresponds to the width of one or two wheels, depending on the design solution. Such products to save space, often perform wall or hanging.

Do-it-yourself wheel shelf for the garage

Storage of one set of rubber does not require the manufacture of a standard rack, which can accommodate several tens of tires. Depending on the individual characteristics of changing the wheels (with or without disks), the consumer allocates space inside the garage. Given the small size of the buildings that car owners have to use, they recommend installing a shelf or wall-mounted rack.

As a raw material, a bar or an unclaimed profile of metal, which can be found in the garage, can be used. Shelf material can be combined, for example, side racks made of iron, and longitudinal rails made of wood or vice versa. In the absence of skills in working with welding, as well as for connecting iron products with timber, bolted joints are used.
