Headphone wiring with microphone and button

Many modern people use headphones in everyday life, and often encounter the fact that they fail. Usually one of the speakers does not work. This happens often, because the wires have a kink property. From constant exposure to the wires, internal contacts break. When such a nuisance occurs, in most cases, you can restore the headset to work on your own.

Important points before wiring the headphones

The reason why headphones with a microphone do not work may also be the incompatibility of two headsets: a phone and headphones. It is for such situations that special adapters have been developed. So if there is a problem with the audibility in the headphones, then first you need to check the most obvious options.

Before you start repairing your headphones, you need to determine the cause of the problem. Quite often, the breakdown of the wires occurs at the place where the wire is constantly subjected to twisting, namely in the plug. Less likely to appear damage in the cable. In this case, you should simply completely change it to another. To determine that there is no sound in the speaker due to malfunctions in the plug, you can try to push the cable into the base of the connector, twisting it in different directions. If after that a sound appears, then the cause of the problem is here.

In order to start wiring the headset with a microphone and a button, you should study the types of connectors. There are cables with three wires, with four, with five, and even with six. Headphones with a microphone are connected through 4 wires. Some models are equipped with non-standard connectors.

Note! If during the desoldering of the headphones, the new connector belongs to a non-standard form, then for connection it is required to use an appropriate adapter.

What is needed for desoldering

To pin out a faulty headset, you must prepare the following:

  • New connector for replacement. It should be the same kind as the old one.
  • For high-quality soldering, you need a soldering iron. Its power should not be high - 25 watts.
  • Rosin and solder.

Today, there are ways to connect the cable without resorting to soldering elements. However, the procedure carried out with the help of a soldering iron guarantees a better work. Soldered contacts are more durable, and will last a long time.

Headphone wiring with microphone and button: step by step

After the cause of the malfunction is identified, and the necessary tools and elements are prepared, you can proceed to the wiring:

  1. With a sharp knife, cut off the old connector, leaving about 0.5-1 cm from the base. Thus, the problem area is removed.
  2. Carefully, so as not to damage the cores, with the same knife, you must remove the insulating sheath. After that, you can see 4 wires. Two cables will be coated, and two will not.
  3. The wires coated with insulating material must be cleaned of the coating with an emery cloth or an office knife. The right and left channels are twisted together. The left channel is usually indicated by the green color of the insulating material, the right channel is red.
  4. If the cable contains only 3 cables, then two of them are channels, and the third is a common screen. In this situation, you just need to clean the cable from insulation without twisting anything.
  5. The connector that will be attached to the headset must be disassembled, inserted through the hole in the base of the cable from the headphones.
  6. Using a soldering iron, solder the contacts to the connector. First, the common screen is soldered, then the right and left channels are attached.
  7. The soldered wires and connector should cool down a bit, and then check if the headphones are working. If the audibility is good and the problem is resolved, then you can start assembling the connector. If the earphone does not work after working, then you should check that the wiring is not removed after soldering.
  8. The wire must be secured to the connector. On modern models of connectors there are special clips. The insulated cable must be inserted into the clamp and secured with pliers.
  9. To be sure, the contacts are wrapped with insulating tape. The connector is going, you can again listen to music and talk.

Attention! If there is still no sound after operation, even after checking all the wires for soldering, then damage to the wires can be near the speaker itself.

In order to properly solder, and quickly fix the malfunction, you do not need additional skills or certain knowledge. All that is needed for quality work is accuracy and the ability to handle a soldering iron. If you can’t work with a soldering iron or work well yourself for the first time, you don’t have to give up, but try again until it works.
